Become a Writing Consultant

For All Consultants

Please ensure that you meet the criteria below before sending in your application materials:

  • Completed English 101 or equivalent with an A (undergraduate tutors only)
  • Established a 3.25 cumulative GPA
    • First semester undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply, but if hired, your employment will be contingent upon earning a 3.25 GPA during your first semester at NC State.
  • Enrolled as a full-time student

If you meet the criteria, please send the following materials to the Writing and Speaking Coordinator.

  • Resume
  • Brief writing sample (previous paper from a class is fine)
  • Class schedule for the upcoming semester (if known)

Your materials can be sent in two parts if registration for the upcoming semester has not yet started. The critical pieces are resume and writing sample; class schedule can be sent later. Please consult dates below to determine where we are in the hiring process.

We do ask that hired consultants prepare for the following job requirements:

  • Enroll in USC 210, Introduction to College Tutoring, the first semester of employment (undergraduate tutors only)
  • Attend graduate consultant training sessions during the fall and spring semester (graduate tutors only)
  • Commit to at least 4 hours of consulting per week
  • Attend and participate in four regular staff meetings per semester
  • Be able to tutor 2 subsequent semesters

  • Rolling applications accepted

March 12

  • Beginning of interviews for fall 2018 consultant positions

April 27

  • Conclusion of interviews for fall 2018 consultant positions
  • Interviewed applicants are informed of hiring decisions

April 30 to August 17

  • Interviews for fall 2018 consultant positions are conducted based on need
  • Interviewed applicants are informed of hiring decisions within one week

Oct. 8

  • Beginning of interviews for spring 2019 consultant positions

Dec. 7

  • Conclusion of interviews for spring 2019 consultant positions
  • Interviewed applicants are informed of hiring decisions
